Common Feelings

Emotional responses vary from person to person. Sexual assault can be extremely traumatic and life changing. It is important to remember that your responses are not crazy; they are normal reactions to a traumatic event. Our goal is to offer support, options and recourses that encourage empowerment and healing. Common responses include:

Feeling responsible for the assault. Remember, a survivor is never responsible for the assailant’s behavior.

Feeling angry and taking the anger out on loved ones.

Feeling ashamed of what has happened.

Feeling helpless because you lost control of the situation.

Wanting to deny that the assault was serious or that it happened at all.

Feeling unclean even after bathing.

Having difficulty sleeping at night or experiencing nightmares.

Concern for the abuser. Hate what they did but think they need help.

What do I do if my child says they were sexually assaulted?

Disclosure can impact the entire family system. You may want to seek your own support from family, friends, or a counselor. Often parents/guardians will have feelings of anger, sadness, and guilt about what has happened to their child. Some feel confused, especially if the person who abused your child is also someone that you love and trust.
Your own feelings can be like the survivor that experiences abuse is going through. Recognize your own feelings and realize the victim may have different feelings than you, and that is okay. Let them safely express their feelings. A caregiver’s response has an enormous impact on the recovery of the person that was abused/assaulted.
